Frequently Asked Questions
Students should schedule their exam appointments as soon as they get their course syllabus, or four (4) days before their exam date. The Testing Center offers both on-campus/remote exam appointments. Students must obtain their instructor’s approval before scheduling their remote exam. The Testing Center operates by appointment only, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.
Duke undergraduate students qualify to take exams in the Testing Center if they:
- Have been granted testing accommodations by the Student Disability Access Office, or
- Need to complete a make-up exam due to an approved absence by the instructor or Dean.
- Additionally, students must be enrolled in a course with a professor who uses the Testing Center to provide testing accommodations, support, or make-ups.
Students should schedule their exam appointments as soon as they get their course syllabus, or four (4) days before their exam date.
Once eligible, the student creates an exam booking request via Accommodate. This must be done well in advance and a minimum of four (4) days before the exam.
On-campus appointments are made through the Accommodate system.
After requesting a remote appointment either by email or phone, an appointment will be made by the testing center staff.
Start times for exams must match the in-class administration time. Exceptions for accommodation-related time adjustments must be approved by the instructor.
For detailed instructions on scheduling an appointment, please click the following link: https://testingcenter.duke.edu/schedule-appointment/.
Once you request an exam appointment on Accommodate, the instructor will receive a notification via email to review the request. The instructor must approve the appointment request, including the date, time, and length. After the instructor approves the request, the exam appointment is officially scheduled, and you will receive a confirmation email.
If the instructor does not approve the appointment due to the date, time, length, or other details, the Testing Center may make changes or corrections to get the request approved. Once approved, you will receive a confirmation email with the appointment details. If changes or corrections are not possible, you will receive an email notifying you of the cancellation of your appointment.
Please arrive at the Testing Center 15 minutes before your appointment to check in with your Duke ID, stow your belongings, and get settled in the exam room.
Students with excused absences can schedule a make-up exam with their instructor’s approval. Make-up exams are handled on a case-by-case basis and will require assistance if the desired appointment day falls outside the four 4-day requirement.
If before or within the four 4-day requirement, book through the Accommodate system. For appointments in less than four 4 days, call our office at 919-684-1601 or email us at testingcenter@duke.edu during normal business hours.
