Approving and Supporting Student Remote Exam Appointments
Remote proctoring is available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.
The Testing Center provides remote exam proctoring through Duke’s Canvas platform via Zoom.
1. Instructor Approval
Students may schedule a remote exam only after receiving explicit approval from their instructor.
The instructor provides written approval (email) for the student so they may proceed with scheduling their appointment.
2. Student Scheduling with the Testing Center
Once approval is granted, the student should contact the Testing Center directly to arrange their remote exam appointment.
Remote appointments cannot be scheduled through Accommodate.
- Phone: (919) 684-1601
- Email: testingcenter@duke.edu
The Testing Center staff will schedule the Zoom appointment and share the Zoom link with the student.
3. Faculty Responsibilities Before the Exam
To ensure a smooth testing experience:
Testing Center staff will provide faculty with a Remote Exam Approval Form to complete.
After completing the form, faculty will return the form, including all allowable exam materials, exam password, and instructions to the Testing Center at least 3 days before the exam date.
The proctor will only provide the password to the student at the start of the remote exam session.
4. What Happens on the Exam Test Day?
The Testing Center follows standardized remote proctoring procedures, including:
- Identity verification using a Duke photo ID or another approved, non-expired ID (e.g., driver’s license).
- A virtual room scan before testing begins.
- The proctor provides the exam password to the student.
- Continuous screen sharing with video and microphone enabled for the entire session.
- If scratch paper is used, the student must scan and upload it at the end of the exam while the proctor observes.
The proctor will also watch the student submit and close out the exam in Canvas.
5. After the Exam
Any irregularities—such as another person entering the room or the student speaking to someone off-camera—will be documented and reported to the instructor.
All remote sessions are recorded and stored for 30 days for review if concerns arise.
